If you want to be a great lead guitar player, it's imperative that you learn guitar scales. You might already know this, but many new guitar players think of scales as being the pentatonic and blues scales. Those pentatonic and blues scales are definitely important to rock guitar lead playing, but they're not the whole story. You should expand your guitar playing so that you are using scales that demand the use of your pinky and have more notes. This is not to just be technically impressive, it's because when you learn guitar scales beyond the blues you expand your aural palette. You have more colors to work with to create dazzling lead guitar playing.

When you begin to learn guitar scales. you should learn the various modes. Each key that you can play in actually has seven different major scale modes. Seven keys times seven modes equals 49 different guitar scales for you to play with! Guitar scale modes are created by differing where you begin and where you end playing the scale. This may sound simplistic, but this makes a significant difference to the sound and feel of the scale and therefore, your lead playing.

Ionian Mode. This is the "straight" mode or standard mode. When you first learn guitar scales. you will first learn the Ionian Mode (or the Aeolian Mode, but we'll talk about that later). The Ionian mode simply means beginning and ending the playing of the scale on the root tone, using the major scale. The formula is : Root Tone -T-T-ST-T-T-T-ST, where T means a full tone or 2 frets and ST means a semi tone or 1 fret. If you play a scale in C major, using the Ionian Mode, the first note you hit is C and the last note you hit is C.

Dorian Mode. This is widely used in rock music. Playing a guitar scale in Dorian means you start and end with the scale's second tone. So, to play the Dorian mode in C major, your first note and last note are both D.

Phrygian Mode. This is very popular for giving an "Egyptian" or Middle Eastern feel to a lead break. To play in Phrygian mode, you start and end on the scale's third tone. So to use C as our example key, the Phrygian mode starts and ends with an E note.

Lydian Mode. This is great for giving a "neo-Classical" or even Renaissance feel to a guitar solo (or if you're doing a jazzy solo it works wonders for that, too). To play a guitar scale in Lydian mode, you begin and end the lead break or solo on the scale's fourth tone. So, in C, you will begin and end a solo on the F note.

Mixolydian Mode. This is widely used for rock and jazz guitar solos and can be easily played over power chords. To play a guitar scale in Mixolydian, begin and end on the scale's fifth tone. So, in C, you'll begin and end your solo with a G note.

Aeolian Mode. This is the "natural minor scale" of the Ionian Mode. So playing a guitar solo in Aeolian Mode allows you to give a minor scale feel to your solo. To play a solo in Aeolian mode, you'll begin and end your solo on the A note.

Locrian Mode. This is a great mode to use to create a high level of tens! ion in a solo, because it emphasizes the leading tone, the note that suggests the root note is coming. In C major, as an example, the Locrian solos will begin and end with the B note.

okay so i REALLY want to play piano(or guitar, maybe both)but i am NOT a patient personso every time i try to learn i give up after a whilealso is there any games or something so i can make this more funer (i know not a word)i remember i had an app on my old itouchand it played a note and then i had to find which one it wasanything like that? especially on an android or itouch (or on PC) please!

I play piano using chords as a guideline. I learnt music through the saxophone though, so I could read music and everything. It was just the hand positioning and flexibility I had to get used to. Now I can play quite well. I think learning piano on a PC or anything else sounds ridiculous, no offense, but maybe it could be fun, if you don't know how.

Lock yourself in a room. Arm a bomb and set the timer for 2 hours. have the piano rigged to the bomb and make it where the only way to disarm the bomb is to play Beethoven perfectly. Im sure you will learn how to play then.

YouTube is always great for learning how to play the piano, but some videos are better than others, so if you pick one and it doesn't help, just try a different one. I'm sure you'll find something out of everything on YouTube. :)

Well i personally like to day dream about being a really good guitarist and that motivates me pretty well. also, getting good sources to learn from also helps. such as a well written learning guide or a skilled teacher. as for games, im not sure. though i have played a game on musictheory.net that was basically find the notes.

It wasn't until probably the last six months or so that I've been able to play the guitar. I've always been very interested since a young age considering my dad and his brothers pretty much grew up on the guitar and drums. It's always been in the family and when I would watch them play they always made it look so easy.. it seemed like almost a natural thing for them. I tried for years to! learn h ow to play... tried to have my father help me, looked to books to teach me, spent hours on youtube watching people try to explain.. etc. Nothing ever really worked. I eventually gave up for a few years then just within the past year or so I became interested in it again when I would see all these girls just going crazy over musicians at shows/concerts... lol. It's probably the best tutorial/instructional course I've ever seen... I learned how to play the guitar very quickly and now it seems like I can almost play songs by ear.. something my uncle can do. Sheet music is written for all players of all instruments and not just the piano.Over the top of the music you will see symbols like this F/C etc and they are the chords, either to be used for the piano player or the guitarist. they are called chord symbols (But first you need to know what notes are in the chords)Underneath that there is normally a square box that gives the guitar position for that chord (as an instruction to guitarists who are still learning where their chords need to be played.)The top treble line (the single one) has the melody, for the singer to play or maybe someone who plays flute etc that wishes to play the song.then next two lines (treble and bass) are the piano staff and this is normally what the piano player would play. I really want to learn how to play the piano (western classical), but in my part of the world I can't find anyone who plays the music I'm interested in. I have two books, but they're somewhat more advanced. Can anyone help me in this? I want someone to list the guidelines for learning piano in each of the following aspects: Learning to read and sight-read, how to practice rhythm, and a suggestion of a few pieces that I should learn as stepping stones. Lastly, any suggestions on how to develop good relative pitch.

Well, I've been playing for 18 yrs & teaching for 6. I like to teach out of the "Piano Adventures" series. If you are an adult, I would chose the "For the Older Beginner". Whatever you do, don't buy any adult books because they progress too fast and don't teach you all the things the other ones teach you (I don't know why they do that, but I can't stand them). I've used the Older Beginner books on adults and they love them and they get better faster because they have a better foundation and the learning curve is great.Once you learn the basics, pick up some easier Mozart/Bach pieces. Learning piano takes time and practice. It's like learning a language or going to school/college for something. If you're going to do it, do it right.For learning to read music, get a theory book that I've used and now teach out of, "Keyboard Theory" by Grace Vandendool. Also, use musictheory.net (note trainer, ear trainer, keyboard trainer, etc...). On that site, they also have lessons that are really good and short. I refer all my students there for extra practice.Sight reading: get a hymnal or some big inexpensive book and read a piece everyday. Don't practice it, just read through it. The more stuff you read through, the better. When I started playing for a church, I got really good at sight-reading because they kept throwing new pieces at me all the time. When you sight-read, look at the piece from beginning to end, start slowly and when you make mistakes, don't fix them, keep going and don't lose th! e beat.R hythm - learn how to count (I know this sounds stupid, but it's hard to do in music) and "subdivide". This is also covered in the "Keyboard Theory" book I told you about.Relative Pitch: Use the ear trainers: Interval ear trainer, scale ear trainer, chord ear trainer. With regular use, you should be good to go in about 3-6 months (depending on your rate of progress).Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions!Make sure you don't skip any steps and learn it the right way the first time!

"Smart Builder" Blocks Create Music Fun and Learning
The Smart Builder Piano features a piano-style keyboard with eight oversized keys that are perfect for little hands. It comes with seven "Smart Builder" blocks: three song blocks, three instrument blocks, and one "beat" block. These blocks can be stacked on the keyboard's three prongs.

Without the Smart Builder blocks, the keyboard plays with a piano sound. But if you connect the xylophone or electri! c guitar block, the keyboard will generate those instrument sounds. Stack on a song block -- "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Old McDonald," or "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" -- and the keyboard will play that song. Press the "play" button to hear the song in its entirety, or your child can play the song herself on the keyboard. Over 100 Different Configurations
We especially like how the toy lends itself to fun experimentation, with the ability to create over 100 musical arrangements by stacking the Smart Builder blocks in different configurations. Kids can experiment with stacking up a song and two musical instruments; two songs and all the instruments; or even put all of the Smart Builder blocks together to hear what happens.

We also like that kids have the option of creating their very own music. Our two-year-old tester naturally started playing the keyboard and was delighted with making her own sounds. The only problem was that some keys on our test keyboard were prone to sticking, which made it a bit difficult, though by no means impossible, for her to play with complete ease.

The Smart Builder Piano also gives older kids a fun introduction to "reading" music. The instructions include the sheet music for one song, which is written in color-coded notes to correspond with the keyboard keys. The keyboard is also compatible with MegaBlocks toys. Your child can incorporate the keyboard into her MegaBlocks building, or she can play with the keyboard on its own. We really like the sheet music and color-coded keys, but we wish that more sheet music was available. If it's available online, we couldn't find it.

HINGHAM – South Shore Conservatory has announced the results of its 23rd annual concerto competition, held Jan. 23 at the Conservatory's Hingham campus. Twelve students from across the South Shore earned awards for their performances and the students performed in a special winners' concert immediately following the competition.

Maria D'Ambrosio of Plymouth, who studies French horn with Megan Riccio, received an honorable mention in Division II.

Ilve Bayturk, of Duxbury, who studies piano with HuiMin Wang took first place for her performance in the PPO Division. As the overall competition winner, she earned the opportunity to perform a movement of Mozart's A Major Concerto KV 414 with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra at the Phil's March 6 family concert in Memorial Hall.

A resident of Duxbury most of her life, Ilve has been a South Shore Conservatory student since 2001. She began Suzuki-method piano lessons at age 6, transitioning to classical piano instruction by 10. Her strong work ethic to study and rehearse and her willingness to learn has developed her talent, earning her several first place prizes in piano solo competitions. Ilve is a freshman at Milton Academy. She also plays the violin in the school orchestra and is the accompanist for Community Voices, a chorus for developmentally delayed adults based at South Shore Conservatory. She also enjoys tennis, reading, travel and movies.

Karen Ji, of Bourne, also studying piano with Wang, took first prize in Division I.

From Braintree, Samuel Yuen, of Braintree, a piano student, took second prize in Division II. Desmond Herzfelder, of Cohasset, won third prize in Division I and his sister, Julia Herzfelder, received second place in Division II. All three study with Wang.

Two students from Hingham also earned awards. Eduardo Varas, a violin student of Ashleigh Gordon, received an honorable mention in Division I and Terence Casey, a violin student of Philip Rush, ear! ned seco nd prize in the PPO Division.

Two students from Norwell who study piano with Eugene Kaminsky also earned awards. Diana Chen placed second in Division III and her brother, Devin, took first place in Division II.

Tascam 07 Digital Portable Recorder Review

The Tascam DR07 (Tascam 07) does everything Tascam claims and even more. It is simple to use and the recordings sound amazing. Used it on the same day it arrived to tape a complete 5-hour band rehearsal. Setting it up was just a matter of putting it on a music stand across the room and pushing REC. I never had to touch it again for 5 hours.

The stereo 128K MP3 audio quality was fine and the resulting 5-hour file used only about 300MB of the 2GB (2000 MB) SD card that came with the Tascam 07. I took it home after the rehearsal and quickly transferred the Mp3 file to my laptop, where I sliced and diced the recording into individual song files with CoolEdit 2000. At last, there is an easy way to remember how we played it at rehearsal and to run a quick review before the gig. This thing is a "must have" for an aging musician.

My friend, you are not alone. All the greats have found themselves lost in this desperate wasteland, known as: the plateau. You've most likely heard of this place, for it exists in every form of human endeavour. Well, now you've arrived. I know I spent many years in there. I had all the guitar tab books, the magazines, the backing track CD's, the videos - everything. But I'd hit a brick wall. So I took a step back, and it remains the best thing I've ever done for my guitar skill.
I stopped wasting time with music notation, forcing myself to learn scales, etc, etc. I also pushed aside the guitar tab and said, "That's enough". I completely changed my tack. I instead would come home from college, and switch on my CD player, and play a random shuffle of whichever CD happened to be in it at the time, guitar music or not. I simply started to find my way around the fretboard, not making too much sense, but finding my way, forging unique runs and licks that would make their way into my own, new, unique style of play.

Then I started to play along to different radio stations, regardless of the kind of music they played. Indie, R n' B, blues, jazz, classical, Spanish, rock, hip hop. You name it, I played guitar along to it. And when I say, "Played along to it", I mean I identified the root note of the songs very quickly, allowing me to construct the chords, and strum along. And I was also developing eyes in my fingertips, meaning my fingers could slide all over the fretboard, and I'd know exactly where to go next to play the note I wanted.
This was golden, and this period of time produced a great spurt in my guitar playing. By ditching the notation and tab, I had force! d myself to learn the guitar by ear. I wish I'd done it sooner. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting you stop taking guitar lessons, and learning scales. But at the very least, in your 'guitar time', I'd strongly recommend your accompanying your theory with outright improvisation. I think this is a big problem with a lot of players, that they never leave the tab. They are constantly learning the new songs of their favourite bands, note-for-note. Such a shame.
What's stopping you from giving it a go? At least, make an effort, one day. Just try and play along to whatever is playing on your mp3 player or radio. The first time you try, you will likely be miserable if you've never attempted it before. But keep trying, dear friend. There is talent within you. Give it chance to grow, and who knows what you could achieve with your guitar-playing.

For Bradley Fergin, decidingto be a musician was easy.
"I knew I wanted to dosomething with music since Iwas a freshman in high school,"he said. "I could be as creative asI wanted to with music."
This music education seniorplays saxophone, piano, guitar,drums and sings.
He said he started withpiano lessons 19 years ago andstarted to learn the saxophonewhen he was in fourth grade.
He got his first saxophonefrom his uncle who had stoppedplaying in high school. Ferginstill has this instrument.
"I was lucky," he said.
Many schools don't havethe budget to allow students toplay saxophone he said. He wasgiven one for free.
Now, Fergin has a collectionof three saxophones: his first one,the one he plays on and one thatwas donated to him to give to astudent in need.
Fergin plans on teachingwhile still focusing on his ownperformances. He said he wantsto do his senior recital nextsemester. He will do studentteaching next year and hopes tograduate in May 2012.
For his major, he had to learnhow to play all of the instrumentsup to a sixth-grade level.
Right now, Fergin said hehas a performance at least oncea month between his groups. Heparticipates in a classic rock band,a New Orleans style band, anacoustic duo, SVSU's sax quartet,SVSU's jazz combo, SVSU's jazzband and the Cardinal Singers.
He said that each one offersa different style of music.
"I like them all for what theybring specifically," he said.
He said he is excited forhis performance with the CourtStreet Saxophone Quartet. It willbe at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March17, in the Rhea Miller RecitalHall.
He said he is perfectlycomfortable playing saxophoneor guitar at bars where it is morerelaxed.
"For SVSU administrationhere, there's a little bit ofnervousness," he said.
Fergin said the ideal settingfor a performance is somet! hinginti mate where people enjoyedthe music he was playing.
"If I could get even about 20people who genuinely appreciatejazz, that would be ideal," hesaid.
In addition to playingsaxophone, Fergin sings. He willpeform in "Dido and Aeneas,"the first opera to be performed atSVSU. It is a three-act tragic lovestory. It is all in English and willshow in April.
He said he debated withhimself about if he should takea year off after school, teachfirst or go right to graduateschool. He decided to try toteach while focusing on his ownmusicianship.
"My performance is such abig part of my life that I have tokeep going with that," he said.
